Fried Chicken Sandwiches
From Michelin starred restaurants to take-out only spots, the Fried Chicken Sandwich quest is a long one.
Dec 2022
I like to say I’ve rarely met a sandwich where I’ve liked the insides more than the bread itself. These sandwiches are the exception.
Red Paperclip
Unlike Chef Kevin Chen himself who is hard to miss walking around with the iconic red paperclip tattoo on his arm, and his newly earned Michelin Star, the fried chicken sandwich is easy to miss. Hidden lower on the menu, it’s easily the best dish he puts up. Chef Kevin Chen's take features a perfect sesame bun, slathered with a creamy sauce that ensures every bite is impressive. The chicken itself is incredibly juicy, and the outer crunchy is packed with flavor just as well – just take a look at this cross section shot!
Rowdy Rooster
For those who enjoy a little heat, Rowdy Rooster is the place to be. Chef Chintan Pandya pushes the boundaries with his fusion creations once again. I’ve only dared to order a Ruffian myself, and snuck a bite of the Rebel both of which are spicy, and a delectable journey for your taste buds. I can’t imagine what the higher levels of spice taste like, but would love to hear from the bolder ones. Don't forget to try the Chili Cauliflower for a tangy and sweet respite from the spice.
Bobwhite’s Counter
Sometimes, you just want a solid fried chicken sandwich that hits all the right notes. Look no further than Bobwhite's Counter. Nestled in a classic potato bun, their sandwich boasts a perfect balance of flavor and spice. The pickles and mayo add a delightful touch, making this a go-to option for any fried chicken lover.
Emily’s
While Emily's is known for its mouthwatering pizza, their fried chicken sandwich is a true standout. Served on a pretzel bun which is often hard to execute, this sandwich is a testament to their craft. Despite its towering and intimidating height, each bite is a burst of deliciousness that leaves you craving for more. I love this one dearly!
The Chick Inn
In the midst of a star-studded landscape of fried chicken joints like Charles Pan Fried, Sylvia’s and Red Rooster, Chick Inn stands out with its classic offerings. In Hamilton Heights, this focused outpost delivers a timeless fried chicken sandwich. Whether you go for the Original or the Spicy Ranch, you won't be disappointed. And if you're in the mood for some comfort food, their Mac and Cheese is also noteworthy. Keep an eye out for their new location in Kips Bay!
Win Son Bakery & Restaurant
Making the trek to Brooklyn is worth it when you have Win Son on your radar. This eatery offers two irresistible options: the Fried Chicken Milk Bun at their bakery and the Chicken & Waffles at the restaurant. While the lines may be long, the payoff is well worth the wait
Chick Chick
A great, albeit smaller bite of a well seasoned and double fried chicken sandwich sits on the Upper West Side alongside a long line of restaurants. The Nashville hot is one of the more manageable ones for those who share my barely above average spice threshold. The classic option with paprika is a safe choice for any palate. The sauce adds a cooling touch, making this a satisfying meal.
Sticky’s
When you're in a pinch and need a decent fried chicken sandwich delivered fast, Sticky's has got you covered. While the hot variant may be a bit too pungent for some, their classic sandwich with slaw hits the spot. It's the perfect option for a quick and satisfying meal on the go.
While New York City boasts an impressive fried chicken sandwich scene – a little shoutout to Upsate NY is warranted. My soon-to-be home has two standout Fried Chicken spots that are worth the trip and can hold their weight in front of any of the NY hard hitters
Gracie’s Luncheonette, Leeds NY
I hesitate to put this on any list in fear of giving away the Catskill’s best kept secret. Everything here is simply outstanding, and it's not often you’ll find me belaboring the decision between a Fried Chicken Sandwich and a Tuna Melt. In fact, I don’t eat many Tuna Melts at all (Old John’s Diner & Daily Provisions are climbing the rankings for me now). The Fried Chicken either on the hot honey biscuit or as a classic sandwich is fresh, juice, crispy, and the right things a sandwich needs to be. The Hot Honey Biscuit itself is flaky, and provides the perfect absorbent balance to the kicker that is their Nashville spice blend.
Buns, Kingston NY
With a name like Buns, you know these guys mean business. This Kingston hotspot focuses on delivering top-notch buns, and their fried "dirty bird" chicken burger is no exception. With a generous serving of coleslaw and pickles, this burger is a flavor explosion. And if you're looking for a healthier option, their grilled chicken sandwich is just as satisfying.
Unhonorable mention: Double Chicken Please
Unfortunately, not every fried chicken sandwich lives up to the hype. Double Chicken Please falls into this category with confusing seating rules and a menu that tries too hard to impress. While the sandwiches are interesting, they fall short in delivering on their fusion flavors. The Hot Honey option is the safest bet, although the Thai Basil could have been incorporated better
